Energy efficient heating has been used successfully in many countries, in particular Germany and Sweden, but its growth in the UK has been relatively slow.
Jeremy Nabarro has been associated with the design, detailing and project management of indoor pools for many years. During that time indoor pools have become more expensive to operate, particularly as very often their locations have dictated the use of oil.
Since 2006, energy costs have risen dramatically to the point where an energy consultant was recently predicting oil would be $200 per barrel within five years!
Energy costs have decreased recently, but the medium and long-term outlook is for continued increase in oil and gas costs.
A number of indoor pool projects have now been completed using energy efficient heating and results have exceeded expectations. Approximately 90% of the energy requirement can be met by energy efficient heating and savings in running costs, when compared to installations fuelled by oil, are in the order of 50%.
Swimming Pool Energy Consultants offer technical design and installation expertise for energy efficient heating systems for indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
We have completed energy efficient installations throughout the UK and have been monitoring results. There is no question that any new or existing indoor pool installation should include consideration for energy efficient heating – whether geothermal, air collector or solar.
In addition, we have recently become involved with the process of generating electricity from wind using VAWT technology (vertical axis wind turbines). This is now practical for home installation and provides cost-effective electricity, with any excess energy purchased by the National Grid.
