FAQs
Do you build complete swimming pools or simply undertake pool plumbing?
Swimming Pool Plumbing (SPP) specialises in pool and spa related plumbing. With plant rooms becoming ever more sophisticated, often combining air handling and geothermal, as well as pump filtration and minimal chlorine sanitising, there is a demand for our specialist services.
Who would construct the pool shell?
Many pool shells, particularly within indoor pool buildings are structural and designed in conjunction with the adjacent footing – frequently as part of a waterproof concrete basement or undercroft and tend to be constructed as a part of the Main Contractor’s works.
Could you recommend a company to construct the pool shell?
No problem, we can obtain a cost for you and arrange to project manage its installation or simply pass the quotation directly to you.
What method of pool water sanitising do you recommend?
The trend over many years has been away from the high dosing of chlorine seen in many commercial pools. Different systems are available including, salination, ionisation or ozonation. We favour the use of ozone, which works effectively whatever the pH balance in the water and chlorine is used as a residual disinfectant at the low level of approx 0.5 ppm. We can provide an assessment of different methods on request.
How do you ensure efficient water circulation within the pool?
Many pools suffer from poor pool water circulation evidenced by hot and cold areas within the pool. We recommend minimal chlorine for the pool, but it is important to provide efficient circulation of water. This is achieved by positioning pool water return pipework and fittings within the base of the pool, which creates a circular movement of water, ensuring satisfactory water circulation.
What fittings do you recommend within the pool?
We propose stainless steel or chrome fittings, which provide an attractive high quality appearance.
We are constructing an indoor pool – why is a pool cover necessary?
Obviously, a motorised or manual cover is necessary for an outdoor pool, as the air temperature always tends to be lower than the pool water temperature. Indoors the air temperature will be similar to that of the water when the pool is uncovered and in use. However, if a pool cover is specified, the air temperature within the pool room can be substantially lower than the pool water temperature. This is achieved by a ‘setback’ facility within the air handling system which is electrically connected to the pool cover mechanism. When the pool cover is in place the air temperature lowers to a pre-set temperature – usually 21 – 22°C.
What design of pool cover do you recommend?
This will depend on budget. The most economical pool cover is a manual reel and bubble cover. Many pools, however, now have motorised pool covers and a variety of designs are available. We should be pleased to summarise the alternatives on request.
Is the deck level water more expensive to operate than a freeboard pool?
Only marginally, because we specify that the overflow ceases when the pool is covered and not in use.
Do you provide air handling?
We have completed many successful air handling installations including the supply and fitting of the air handling unit, controls and all associated insulated ducting and controls. Particular attention will be paid to sound attenuation, and silencers are provided for all ducts.
Will you complete the supply and installation of boilers?
We will complete the integrating of all heating associated with the indoor pool.
Have you any experience with ground source geothermal heating?
We work closely with our sister company The Deeply Boring Company Ltd – you can view their pages on this site. The majority of upmarket indoor pools are now selecting geothermal due to the recent steep rise in energy costs and the considerable savings to be achieved.
Do you become involved in the supply and commissioning of spas, saunas and steam rooms?
Many recent indoor pools have included a spa and frequently a sauna or steam room. Spas can be prefabricated portable spas or in concrete, finished as the adjacent pool. Steam rooms have become popular and can be finished in mosaic, stone or bookmatched marble. We would be pleased to provide further details.
